Do you think about money all the time?

March 6th, 2008 at 10:30 am

Do you think about money all the time, good or bad? Do you think most people do?

What's the old saying... "Money makes the world go round"? Most of my friends and family are to some degree self employed so the majority of what I hear is from their point of view and it seems that money is always the conversation. How to get more, how to spend less and how to save more. I often wonder if those who work for others think about money as much as the self employed.

It makes sense that money would be on their mind as there is no guaranteed paycheck (although is there ever a guarantee that your paycheck will always come). But I wonder if the S.E. are always thinking of ways to make more where is the other is thinking more along the lines of saving more and spending less.

If you are S.E. or not which way do you think about money... as a way to make more, a way to spend less, or a way to save more.

It will be interesting to see the comments.

I'll go first. I'm the responsible party (along with DH) for bringing home the bacon, and I think predominantly about ways to make more money. I definitely think about saving and spending less, but the biggest thought is making more... what about you?

I am a consultant, so my work is a little less stable than a full time employee. The more stable the environment (work and economy), the less the average person thinks about money in my opinion. I also work in the investment field so how to generate more alpha (or return or money) does come up a lot.

However, since I started getting serious about budgeting and paying off consumer debts, my main focus has been spending less and paying down debt.

I focus on saving more and spending less. My dh is a self employed builder!

I think about ways to live on the money I have, and still save.

I guess saving more. Which the point mostly is to not think about it so much.

Though I do enjoy the topic, very much, as I deal with money every day at work. For the most part, I prefer my own finances to be in the background. I don't want to think about it THAT much. Big Grin

    Yes, I do.

I am planning our dept. budget for next fiscal year now. (I'm in charge of numbers for our department). I am crunching numbers for sales, cost of goods, profits, assets, cash balance ALL DAY LONG for last few days. And, I enjoy doing it. I think about money both for me and my company all the time.

Wonderful question! Because, yes, I spend a vast amount of my waking hours thinking about money. Big Grin Seriously, how can one not? Because, it's amazing how many things involve money in some way, shape, or form. And if it involves money, it involves frugality. It's about the most pervasive thing I've ever gotten myself into. Big Grin

In my case though, I do tend to think more about saving... but only because it comes up more frequently than it does trying to figure out how to make more money.... However, in my mind, both are equally vital.
